The Michigan Merit Curriculum and other statewide initiatives are designed to meet a call from education and business leaders to overhaul schools in our state and across the nation. The national Commission on the Skills for of the American Workforce [www.skillscommission.org] indicates that schools must begin to engage learners in tying together the content and processes of mathematics, science, and language arts in order to meet the call for highly skilled people with higher, post-secondary educations. The American Society for Engineering Education is working on K-12 Engineering/Engineering Technology Standards in order to enlighten the citizens of our country to understand “…the need for innovative products that support the development of new technologies maintaining our national security and way of life.” Design & Technology Education offers K-12 teachers and programs standards-based content, processes, and resources to meet the call and assist in bringing a real world context to all subject areas.
