What is the Learning Institute for Technology Education?

LITE is a nonprofit Michigan corporation dedicated to assist in the integration of Technology Education in the schools. Teacher inservice workshops (Technology Fests) will be organized and managed; Technology Learning Activities (TLAs) will be published to keep teachers up-to-date on happenings and materials in Technology Education.

To sum it up in one sentence, the Learning Institute for Technology Education will be a center of resources for Technology Education.

To tie this all together, LITE has adopted FILAMENT as its motto:

Directions

From Detroit

To the school: Take I-96 W to 496/127 N (exit 106). This becomes 27; follow 27 N. Exit at Price Road. Turn left (west) onto Price Road. At stoplight turn right (north) onto Old US 27 or Business 27. Turn left at Townsend Road (there’s a stoplight) Continue straight ahead past the stop sign at Lansing Street. St. Johns Middle School is on the right (north). Turn right into the drive and park either in the lot in front of the building or on the north side of the building. Parking on the north side gets you to the auditeria quicker and more directly.

From Grand Rapids

Take I-96 E to I-69 (exit 89, just west of Lansing). Take I-69 E to US 27 (exit 87). Take US 27 N to Townsend Road, at the south end of St. Johns. There is a stoplight at the intersection of Townsend and US 27. Turn left at Townsend Road (there’s a stoplight) Continue straight ahead past the stop sign at Lansing Street. The St. Johns Middle School is on the right (north). Turn right into the drive and park either in the lot in front of the building or on the north side of the building. Parking on the north side gets you to the auditeria quicker and more directly.

To the hotel: The Sleep Inn is just off 127 at the Lake Lansing Road exit. From the motel to the school, just get on 127 N, which becomes 27 N, approximately ½ mile and exit at Price Road. The Sleep Inn will be on the right side of the road behind Bob Evans.

Firefly Nomination Information
Each year the Learning Institute for Technology Education (LITE) seeks out educators who have provided leadership in the field of Technology Education. This year outstanding leaders will be recognized on Friday, February 26, 1999 at the Leadership Awards Banquet. We are asking for your help in finding these dedicated individuals who make a difference in the lives of students and other professionals. Criteria for nominating outstanding Technology Educators may include:
¨ Statewide leadership (conference presenter/speaker, Committee work, or writing team member)

¨ Professional development (workshops or classes taught- for other educators)

¨ Sharing information (developing lessons for colleagues, writing articles in professional journals or writing books for students.)

The Technology Education Leadership Night has four purposes:
1. To celebrate the effort and innovation in the area of curriculum development and program implementation in-the area of Technology Education.

2. To thank teachers who have given of their own time to provide leadership at the state and national level.

3. To provide these leaders with a professional development opportunity to continue their growth, and

4. To share their expertise with the rest of the state. The following day at the LITE spring conference, each Firefly will present a unit at the Curriculum Integration Festival. They will include a table top display of student projects and folio.

If you know of someone you would like to nominate, please complete and return the attached Firefly Nomination Form.

The cost of the Leadership Night and Springfest Conference is $85 and should be covered by the nominator, school district, or with district Eisenhower monies. Hotel and travel expenses should be covered by sponsor.

Each firefly nominee needs to submit a Nominee Packet consisting of:

1. A Design Brief for a lesson taught

2. A Curriculum Integration Matrix

3. A folio (either student or teacher made) to go with the lesson

4. Copies of student work (photocopies or pictures)

5. A 1 to 3 sentence statement or philosophy of "What changes technology has brought to me professionally."

**NOTE: AII materials submitted may be put on a diskette (be sure to list computer type & software package) and may be printed in the LITE Source**

Method of Payment

The cost of the workshop is $85.00 before January 18, 1999; $100 after that date. For a team of 3 or more the cost is $75 per person before January 18, 1999; $90 after that date. This includes lunch and workshop materials. Sponsors are assisting with costs to help us keep your cost to a minimum. Lunch will be provided. Check: Eisenhower funding may be available.
